Earlier this year I accepted a commission to paint something that would hang over the fireplace in our friend's new condo. It's oil on birch panel, about 80" tall by 36 inches wide. The cabinetry and finishes are walnut so naturally we went with a walnut frame. I milled the profile and spacers at a local woodworking coop and did the finish work back at the studio. To install the painting we used a cleat system. This was the best option to support the weight. The most challenging part of the process was equally the most enjoyable: using the frame's finish as part of the color palate. This ensured that the frame would be an integral component of the whole and not an after-thought. Nor did we have to hunt down the perfect finish, leaving plenty of time to enjoy some great Sangria's.
